April is Heartworm Awareness Month Print E-mail
Finally Spring is here and we can begin to enjoy the wonderful weather and the beautiful flowers that are starting to bloom.  However, that also brings those things that we are not as excited about like fleas, ticks, and those pesky mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes carry Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of heartworm disease that is transferred to your healthy dog by infected Mosquitoes.  Heartworm has no obvious clinical signs or side effects in the early stages, making the need for preventative measures that much more important.  Unfortunately an advanced infection may and can result in death.  That is why a preventative for your dog is vitally important.

heartworm_heart2Did you know that 64% of dogs will leave a veterinary clinic without a heartworm preventive according to the American Heartworm Society.  Did you also know that in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri a veterinary clinic will see on average of 6-25 cases of heartworm per year and per clinic?  That is why at Gardner Animal Hospital we are offering a promotion for April and May as we focus on Heartworm Awareness.

Prevention is extremely important but your dog must be tested yearly for heartworms to take the approved preventative.  While the overall cost of testing and prevntion might seem expensive it only totals to about 10-15% of the total cost to treat your dog with heartworms.  Therefore we are offering 25% off the purchase of a heartworm test when you agree to purchase at least 6 months of heartworm prevention.   Plus when you purchase a years worth of Heartgard you will receive a $5 rebate from the manufacturer.  The promotion for Heartworm Awareness will last from April until the end of May.

Please take time to consider heartworm prevention for your loyal companion in the next couple months and as always please call if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thanks for your continued business,

The Staff of Gardner Animal Hospital

Doggie Daycare

Doggie daycare provides a great outlet for all your dog’s energy. While you spend the day at work, your dog will have the day to play. At the end of each day, you both can go home and curl up on the couch together.

In addition, daycare provides important exercise and socialization that your dog might not otherwise receive. This can be valuable when dealing with behavioral problems or destructive behavior.

Our daycare program consists of supervised only playgroups. Playgroups are established based on size and energy levels. Our playgroup size never exceeds an 8:1 ratio, that gives our staff the ability to interact with each guests and pay special attention to playgroup activities.
