HEAT STROKE IN DOGS

JuneBugWhen a dog is exposed to high temperatures, heat stroke can result. Heat stroke is a very serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Dogs do not sweat through their skin like humans – they release heat primarily by panting and they sweat through their foot pads. If a dog cannot effectively expel heat, the internal body temperature begins to rise. Signs of heat stroke can include, raised body temperature, vigorous panting, dark red gums, lethargy, and vomiting.

If you suspect heat stroke, you must take immediate action. First, move your dog out of the heat and away from the sun right away. Begin cooling your dog by placing cool, wet rags or washcloths on the body. DO NOT use ice or very cold water! Extreme cold can cause the blood vessels to constrict, preventing the body’s core from cooling. Offer your dog cool water, but do not force water into your dog’s mouth. Call your vet right away – even if your dog seems better.

Prevention
  • NEVER leave your dog alone in the car on a warm day, regardless of whether the windows are open. Even if the weather outside is not extremely hot, the inside of a car acts like an oven.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise on hot days.
  • Make sure outside dogs have access to shade.
  • Keep fresh cool water available at all times.
HEARTWORMS
Canine heartworm disease develops when a dog is bitten by a mosquito carrying microscopic heartworm larvae. As the mosquito feeds, it deposits these microscopic larvae in the dogs bloodstream. Adult heartworms can grow 10-12 inches in length and make their home in the right side of the heart and pulmonary (lung) arteries, often causing lung disease and heart failure.

Symptoms may not be obvious right away. But, as heartworms grow and start causing damage to the pulmonary arteries, signs of the disease may include a mild persistent cough, lethargy, decreased appetite, weight loss. Eventually, as blood flow becomes more restricted, dogs can develop heart failure.

Annual testing is recommended for the success of any heartworm prevention program. Heartworm preventives are effective when given properly. For more information on heartworms, please ask one of our Technicians. Our daycare program consists of supervised only playgroups. Playgroups are established based on size and energy levels. Our playgroup size never exceeds an 8:1 ratio, that gives our staff the ability to interact with each guests and pay special attention to playgroup activities.

Doggie daycare provides a great outlet for all your dog’s energy. While you spend the day at work, your dog will have the day to play. At the end of each day, you both can go home and curl up on the couch together.

In addition, daycare provides important exercise and socialization that your dog might not otherwise receive. This can be valuable when dealing with behavioral problems or destructive behavior.

Our daycare program consists of supervised only playgroups. Playgroups are established based on size and energy levels. Our playgroup size never exceeds an 8:1 ratio, that gives our staff the ability to interact with each guests and pay special attention to playgroup activities.
